New York Primary day - Thursday September 13!
A note from the Up2Us Board of Directors:
Up2Us proudly supports Democratic candidates from the local level to the national level. With the critical goal of defeating Terrence Murphy in November, we thought that it was important to lend our support by endorsing as early as possible. As a general policy we do not endorse before a primary. We made an exception to this by endorsing Robert Kesten for the NYS Senate District 40 race in the belief that there would not be a primary. We were impressed with the passion and commitment Mr. Kesten brought to the race. When four-term County Legislator Peter Harckham entered the race in May we recognized that we now have two excellent candidates. Up2Us will support both candidates in their primary race and will endorse the winner in September with the ultimate goal of turning SD40 blue. In the meantime we will work hard to get out the vote!
On behalf of our membership, the Up2Us Board of Directors is proud to announce our endorsement of Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
Senator Stewart-Cousins was elected by her Democratic colleagues to serve as the leader of the Senate Democratic Conference -the first woman in the history of New York to hold a legislative leadership position.
We know that Senator Stewart-Cousins is a true advocate for the values on which Up2Us was founded. She has demonstrated her commitment to public education with increases of State funding. She has supported workers by fighting for raising the minimum wage, cutting middle class income taxes, ensuring access to quality affordable health care and creating thousands of jobs in Westchester through the Regional Economic Development Councils. She strongly protects women’s health care and reproductive rights, supports safer communities with the toughest gun control laws in the nation and combatting climate change through support of the state’s Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Up2Us was honored to host Senator Stewart-Cousins as a featured speaker at the second meeting of our organization. She also campaigns tirelessly for Up2Us endorsed candidates including George Latimer and Shelley Mayer.
She has done all this - and more - which is why Up2Us is proud to endorse Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and we encourage every Democrat in the 35th District to vote for her on Thursday, September 13.
Up2Us is proud to endorse our own Board Member, Francesca Hagadus-McHale for the position of Mt. Pleasant Town Council.
A Westchester resident since 1967 and Mt. Pleasant resident since 1993, Ms. Hagadus has a strong history of grassroots activism in Mt. Pleasant, Westchester and across New York. She is an active member and founder of Up2Us, a member of Indivisible Pleasantville and has energetically campaigned for Democrats across the county.
“I have a lifelong interest in public policy and community service and am eager to bring a fresh perspective on local issues to the Town Council on behalf of ALL the residents of our Town.” - Francesca Hagadus-McHale.
“In the two years I’ve known Francesca, I have seen few people as energetic and committed to exhibiting the values of equality, transparency, fairness and respect. In addition, when we canvas in the area, Francesca knows so many people and has her finger on the pulse of what’s going on – I’m confident she will include people who have not been included in town deliberations before and will ensure that town council operations proceed with greater transparency than seen for many years,” says Up2Us Board Member Beth Sauerhaft.
Francesca retired from the Chappaqua Central School District in 2015 where she taught both French and Spanish. She currently fills various leave replacement positions throughout Westchester; her most recent position being as a French teacher at Pleasantville Middle School and High School. Ms. Hagadus received her BS and MA from Georgetown University and her Teaching Certificate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She currently lives in Pleasantville with her two children and has already been endorsed by the Mt. Pleasant Democratic Committee on which she currently serves as a District Leader.
We are honored to call Francesca one of our own and proudly endorse her candidacy for Mt. Pleasant Town Council. We encourage all members to visit https://www.facebook.com/francescahagadus2018/ and to share with your friends.
Mount Pleasant is a town in Westchester County, New York, in the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 43,724. The hamlets of Valhalla, Hawthorne, Pocantico Hills and Thornwood, and the villages of Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, and a small portion of Briarcliff Manor lie within the town.
Up2Us is proud to endorse incumbent New York State Assemblyman, David Buchwald for another term in office.
Mr. Buchwald’s legislative record in the Assembly, as well as his activism prior to being elected to the Assembly, show the depth and breadth of his dedication to Up2Us’s ideals. “From fighting for equality for women, to working to reduce our tax burden, to ensuring Westchester protects and preserves a pristine natural environment, to leading the effort to clean up Albany’s systemic corruption by authoring the groundbreaking constitutional amendment allowing for the forfeiture of corrupt public officials’ taxpayer-funded pensions, it is my duty to represent the values of my Westchester constituents and serve as a voice for the voiceless,” says Buchwald.
Buchwald’s service as a Member of the New York State Assembly has afforded him the great opportunity to stand up for his constituents: in their workplaces, schools and neighborhoods – working to promote good-paying jobs, access to quality public education and home communities that are great places to live, work and raise a family. He has always fought for progressive policies, championed legislation that improves government and has stood up for working families across New York State.
In line with the ideals of Up2Us, Buchwald says “I view my role, as well as the role of any legislator, as pivotal to protecting our rights and ensuring equality for everyone.”
Buchwald is also the endorsed candidate of 5 parties (Democratic, Independence, Reform, Women's Equality and Working Families) and is running against a Conservative/Republican challenger whose prime policy proposal is to defund New York’s anti-gun violence SAFE Act (the first bill Buchwald voted on and co-sponsored as a State Assemblyman).
We know that David Buchwald will continue to ensure that Westchester's values are well represented in Albany. So on behalf of the membership of Up2Us, the Board of Directors wholeheartedly endorses David Buchwald for NYS Assemblyman. She'll also fight for functioning transit, affordable housing, criminal justice reform, workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, environmental sustainability, and protections against sexual abuse, assault, and harassment so that every human being has a safe working environment, regardless of what they do for a living.
And so, on behalf of our membership, the Board of Directors of Up2Us heartily endorses Alessandra Biaggi for New York State Senate in District 34.
